Eruption at Mount Agung

The column of smoke over Mount Agung reached a height of 1500 meters on Saturday Nov. 26, 2017 said a spokesman for the National Emergency Situations Authority of Indonesia. The alert level remained at the second highest level. So far, there are no restrictions on air traffic. "Bali is safe," he said.

In Indonesia are about 130 volcanoes since the country is located on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire. In mid-September all signs had pointed at an imminent eruption of Mount Agung, and on 22 September the authorities called out the highest level of warning. More than 130,000 people fled from their villages in the vicinity of the volcano and sought refuge in shelters.

But the activity of Mount Agung then subsided, at the end of October, the authorities lifted the highest alert level again. Only a zone of 7.5 kilometers diameter around the crater may not be entered. Nearly 25,000 people are currently still in emergency shelters.
The more than 3000 meters high volcano erupted last in the years 1963 and 1964, about 1200 people were killed at that time.
